We arrived at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on the wrong day and at the wrong time, so we found it closed. It was an impressive memorial to a statesman venerated by the Vietnamese People.

The Mausoleum dominated the surrounding area and overlooked broad roads, free of litter, and well kept beds of shrubs. With only the occasional cyclist in sight, it was quite peaceful compared with the bustle of Hanoi.

Walking down the road from the Mausoleum to the Vietnam War Memorial, we passed these workers picking the leaves off the peach trees, to encourage them to flower during "Tet", the Vietnamese New Year.

The Vietnam War Memorial bathed in the winter sunlight with ice already forming on its moat. In the distance stood the impressive Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the national flag.
